Conquest and isolation: a symposium for Brian Bosworth

Prof. Brian Bosworth retired at the end of 2007 after 40 years' service at the University of Western Australia, where he built up a reputation as one of the foremost Ancient Historians of his generation.

The University is justifiably proud of Prof. Bosworth's contribution to scholarship over this period, particularly as it has been forged so far from any other formally constituted centre of Classics and Ancient History, and it wished to celebrate his career in an appropriate way to mark his retirement.

Through the generosity of the Vice-Chancellor, the Institute of Advanced Studies, the Faculty of Arts, and the Austin lecture fund, a symposiumcalled Conquest and Isolation was held to honour him with invited speakers from Australia and overseas.

The speakers included Elizabeth Baynham (Newcastle), Peter Bedford (ECU), Getzel Cohen (Cincinnati), Waldemar Heckel (Calgary), John Melville Jones (UWA), Lara O'Sullivan (UWA), Pat Wheatley (Otago), David Whitehead (Belfast) and John Yardley (Ottawa).
