In recent years, the study of emotions has become a central focus for disciplines dedicated to an understanding of the human condition.

And in a rapidly changing world there is a more urgent need than ever to understand what motivates people to act as they do.

This symposium brought together scholars from a range of disciplines, including anthropology, human biology, psychology, literary studies and music, to discuss the relationship between emotion and motivation.

The Convenor was Professor Kay Milton, 2007 IAS Professor-at-Large
