The focus of this two-day multi-disciplinary symposium was unstructured outdoor play.

A number of international and national speakers across a wide-range of disciplines presented.

Issues to be explored were:

  • Loss of children’s contact with nature
  • Safety issues and risk
  • Childsplay regarding fitness, obesity and ill-health
  • Environmental generational amnesia
  • Structured and unstructured play-spaces
  • Schools and unstructured play

The symposium was co-sponsored by IAS and ARACY (Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth) ARC/NHMRC Research Network.

There was also a public lecture entitled Growing up in a risk averse society delivered by Tim Gill.
