Holocaust History and Survivor Testimony: the case of the Starachowice factory slave labour camps

A public lecture by Christopher Browning, Frank Porter Graham Professor of History Emeritus, University of North Carolina.

This lecture examined three issues: the problems involved in using survivor testimony as the sole or primary source to write on otherwise undocumented aspects of Holocaust history, the understudied phenomenon of the factory slave labour camp in Nazi-occupied Europe, and the survival strategies of Jewish slave labourers interned in such camps.

Christopher Browning is the Frank Porter Graham Professor of History Emeritus at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He is the author of eight books on the Holocaust, including Ordinary Men, Origins of the Final Solution, and Remembering Survival. He also served as an expert witness for war crimes investigations and trials in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, and the US, and was an expert witness in the Holocaust denial trials of Crown Counsel vs. Ernst Zuendel (Toronto, 1988) and David Irving vs. Deborah Lipstadt (London, 2000).

This lecture was presented by the Institute of Advanced Studies and the Holocaust Institute of Western Australia Inc.
