A masterclass with Dave Warner, professional musician, playwright, screenwriter, and novelist.
Over forty-five years Dave Warner has made a living as a professional musician, playwright, screenwriter, and novelist. He’s had gold records, his films have featured the likes of Molly Ringwald, Kylie Minogue andTravis Fimmel. He is the 2016 Ned Kelly Award winner for crime fiction for his last novel, Before it Breaks, and he has worked on such TV shows as Packed to the Rafters, McLeod's Daughters, Rescue Special Ops and the INXS telemovie Never Tear Us Apart.
In this masterclass, tailored predominantly but not exclusively for writers, Dave will guide you backstage of the entertainment industry to those areas that only seasoned professionals have access to. He’ll run you through his principle of ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE - a basic test you can apply to your project, be it book, film or television, to calculate its chances of success.
On the practical side, he’ll take you through his process for writing his novels: where they begin, what techniques has he found work for him, and how an inexperienced genre writer has a chance for a best seller. He’ll guide you through some basic differences between short-form and long form TV series and discuss the critical importance of the story engine and The Sword of Damocles – a guaranteed genre winner.
For some writing nuts and bolts he will show what actually happens in a TV plotting room and give you his opinion on those oft asked questions like whether you need an agent, and on the differences in the sorts of people you find in each of the industries of music, books, television and film, so you can decide where you might best fit.
